Former president of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has passed away at the age of 95. The overthrown dictator had his fair share of controversies, and was criticised for human rights abuse and corruption.
His second wife Grace also took part in a fair share of controversies. Here we take a look at his relationship with his controversial and lavish wife.
Mugabe married his first wife Sally Hayfron in 1961, who he met while he was working in Ghana.
While married to Sally, he began an affair with his secretary Grace Marufu, who was 41 years younger than him. At the time she was also married to a man named Stanley Goreraza. During the affair Robert and Sally had two children together – Bona in 1988 and Robert in 1990.
But after Sally died from a chronic kidney ailment in 1992, the two decided to tie the knot. Robert and Grace got married in a large Catholic wedding ceremony in August 1996. At the time she was 31, and he was 72 years old.
In 1997 Grace gave birth to their third child, Chatunga, when Robert was 73.
Very few first ladies have caused as much controversy as Grace Mugabe in Africa.
‘Gucci Grace’, as some have derisively christened her, earned the sobriquet for her flamboyant shopping sprees to fashion capitals as Zimbabweans starved.
A girl of humble beginnings, her lavish wedding in 1996, following the death of Mugabe’s first wife Sally Hayfron, was dubbed the wedding of the century.
Her involvement in Mugabe’s ZANU-PF increased her prominence and was at one time thought to be harbouring plans to succeed her aging husband.
